Description of Hungarian Names

THE EMERGENCE of Hungary as a major European power in the 19th century, and its alliance with Austria, has had a lasting effect on the bestowal of names. In addition to traditional Hungarian names, those with Germanic, Slavonic, and Latin roots are also now in common use. With the fall of communism, religion is once again freely practiced and Christian influence ensures the continued bestowal of saints' names. Anna, Maria, and Zsuzsanna are quite popular, as are Istvan, Janos, and Miklos. Unlike other European countries, Hungarians place the surname first.
