From the Old French Tristran, which is from the Celtic Drystan, a name derived from drest (tumult, riot). The name, which was altered in reference to the Latin tristis (sad), was borne in Celtic legend by a knight who freed Cornwall from a tribute of young men imposed by an Irish king. He was later sent to Ireland by King Mark of Cornwall to bring back Princess Iseult as the king's bride. On the return voyage, both Tristan and Iseult drank from a love potion intended for the king, and became lovers. Tristan left to fight for King Howel of Brittany and, seriously wounded in battle, sent for Iseult. She arrived too late and died from grief next to Tristan's deathbed. The tale was the subject of many popular tragedies during the Middle Ages |
