From the Ecclesiastic Late Latin Iacomus, an evolution of Iacobus, which is ultimately from the Hebrew Yaakov (seizing by the heel, supplanting). See JACOB. The name, which is borne in the Bible by a brother of Jesus, has long been in use in Scotland and is, in particular, associated with the royal House of Stuart. James I (1394-1437) enthusiastically ruled Scotland from 1424 to 1437. James VI (1566-1625), the son of Mary Stuart, became king in 1567 and succeeded to the English throne in 1603 as James I and henceforth ruled Scotland, England, and Ireland. His grandson James II (1633-1701), a Roman Catholic, ruled from 1685 until 1688, when he was deposed in favor of his Protestant daughter, Mary. The name then became a national symbol of Catholicism and Highland opposition to the English throne. Seamus is the Gaelic form |
