One story claims that it was produced from the hair of the goddess Tulasi; another says it was created during the churning of the oceans during the god's and demon's quest for the nectar of immortality. The name was borne by the poet and spiritual leader Tulsidas (1523-1624), the author of the Ramcharitmanas.
