Derived from the Sanskrit sitd (furrow). The name is borne by the goddess of agriculture and the harvest, who is seen as an incarnation of the goddess Lak-shmi. Sita was married to Rama after he bent the great bow of Shiva, but was abducted by the evil king Ravana and taken to his island kingdom. She was rescued by Rama, but because the public doubted her virtue, she sacrificed herself by fire to prove her purity. She was restored to life by the fire-god Agni, but Rama yielded to public pressure and banished her. She lived in a hermitage with her twin sons until Rama accidentally found her. She gave him the children and was consumed by the earth, her spiritual mother. Sita is worshiped along with Rama |
