Compound name composed from the Sanskrit rama (pleasing) and Krishna, the name of a popular Hindu deity: hence, "pleasing to Krishna." The name was borne by spiritual leader Ramakrishna Paramahansa (1836-86). He is famous for his devotion to attaining Enlightenment. As a young man, his passion for spiritual matters was frowned upon by his family and he was married at the age of twenty-three to Sharda Devi, a child of five. However, Ramakrishna remained absorbed in spiritual matters and spent time learning under many great spiritual leaders, and in time attained his own group of devotees. He revered his wife to the point of worshiping her as the divine mother, and called her the Holy Mother. He preached tolerance, brotherhood, equality for men and women, and an active quest for spiritual realization and Enlightenment
