Compounding of the Sanskrit elements mohana (attractive, one who attracts, bewitching) and dasa (servant, slave): hence, "servant of Mohan." The name was borne by Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), also known as Mahatma Gandhi. Foremost, he was a man of peace, and is remembered for his deep concern for the underprivileged masses and for his protest against untouchability. He set up many programs for education and rural reconstruction, and set out to improve hygiene and living conditions for the poor. He was leader of the Indian National Congress and worked for Indian independence, being jailed many times for organizing satyagraha (passive resistance) movements and initiating civil disobedience. He was shot and killed in 1948 by a Hindu zealot who was upset by Gandhi's tolerance for Muslims |
