Derived from the Sanskrit krsna (black, dark). The name is borne by one of the greatest of the Hindu gods. Because of a prophecy that a son of King Vasudeva would kill King Kamsa, Vasudeva's first six sons were murdered. The seventh child was miraculously transferred from the womb of Devaki to another woman, thus saving the child's life. After Krishna was born, he was secretly given to a cowherd's family in exchange for a female child. Later, King Kamsa seized the female baby, leaving Krishna in safety. He revealed himself as the incarnation of the supreme god on the eve of the Mahab-harata war |
