Derived from the Sanskrit jaya (victory). The name was borne by the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964). He became a follower of Gandhi and entered into Indian politics. Nehru took the mantle of leadership from Gandhi after a Hindu zealot gunned Mohatma down in 1948. He led his country with a philosophy of goodwill and harmony, a policy that led to India's being taken advantage of by several countries. After cultivating a friendship with China and supporting them before the United Nations, Jawaharlal Nehru was bitterly betrayed when China invaded India and forced the Indian Army to retreat. Disheartened and humiliated, Nehru died in 1964 after a brief illness |
