Variant form of Govind (one who finds cows). The name was borne by Gobind Rai (1666— 1708), the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth guru of the Sikhs. After his father was martyred at the hands of the Mogul emperor Aurangzeb in 1675, Gobind Rai succeeded his father, becoming the tenth guru of the Sikhs. He became known as Guru Gobind Singh, a leader who managed to unite his people and give them hope and promise for the future |
