Sound. Nez Perce. Toohulhulsote was a strong, determined chief who refused to sign the Treaty of 1863. He and several other Nez Perce leaders would not go to the reservation area and kept their people on their ancient tribal lands. This led to trouble in 1877 when the United States government pressed compliance with the treaty. Toohulhulsote was jailed, eventually released, and fought in the Nez Perce War. He was killed in the final battle at Bear Paw in Montana in 1877 |
