Sitting bull. Sioux. Tatanka Iyotanka was borne by several people, most notably a Hunkpapa medicine man and a well-known Oglala leader. The former (1834-90) was head of the Strong Hearts, a warrior society active in the Plains Indian wars and many other battles including the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The latter, sometimes called Sitting Bull the Minor (1841-76), was at first friendly to the whites, becoming fluent in English and learning to read and write. His attitude changed, however, after the outrage at Sand Creek in 1864. He fought under Little Wound for the next three years, avenging the deaths at Sand Creek. Seeing the desperate situation on the reserves, he abandoned the fight and enrolled in the Red Cloud Agency to work for better supplies and living conditions |
