Derived from the Cherokee tsikwaya (sparrow, principal bird). The name was borne by the inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary. He and his daughter, Ahyoka, spent years developing the system, beginning first with pictures for all the words. At one point, he was accused of practicing witchcraft and all of his pictures were burned. He persevered, and in place of the impractical pictures, developed a syllabary of eighty-six characters. His tribe became the first north of Mexico to have its own system of written communication. He died in Mexico, seeking the "lost Cherokee." |
