Of debated origin and meaning, some think Sacajawea, or Sacagawea, is from the Hidatsa tsakakawia (bird woman). Others think it might mean "boat traveler." The name was borne by a young Sho-shoni woman whose childhood name was Boinaiv (grass maiden). She was captured by Crow warriors as an adolescent and sold to Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian fur trader who was hired as a guide for Lewis and Clark. Sacajawea and her newborn son accompanied them, and she proved to be an invaluable interpreter and intermediary |
