Cherokee name derived from nungno huttarhee (man on the mountaintop). The name was borne by Major Ridge (c. 1770-1839). A prosperous farmer and Speaker of the Cherokee Council, he realized the problems of incoming settlers onto Cherokee land. He formed the Treaty Party with his son John and his nephew Elias Boudinot, believing that only through compromise and accommodation would the Cherokee people be treated fairly by the United States government. The Cherokee Council disagreed and the Ridge Treaty was never to be. The Cherokee were forced to accept the terms of the Treaty of New Echota, which took their prosperous farms and lands in return for desolate land in Indian Territory |
