Two moons. Cheyenne. The name was borne by two important chiefs. The elder Two Moon led Cheyenne warriors in the 1866 attack on Fort Phil Kearney and later joined with the Sioux in an attempt to close all westward passages. The younger Two Moon, a nephew of the elder, led his forces in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. In the aftermath, he led his people to Fort Keogh and surrendered to General Miles. He then served as a United States Army scout. He became chief of the Northern Cheyenne on the reservation and died in 1917 |
