Hardwood. Apache. The name was borne by the leader (1812-74) of the Chiricahua Apache. They lived in peaceful coexistence with whites for nearly ten years, until the peace was destroyed in 1861 when Lieutenant George Bascom refused to believe that Cochise had not kidnaped a white child. Ensuing bloodshed between the two groups was great. In 1872 peace was restored when the Chiricahua were guaranteed their own reservation in the Chiricahua Mountains |
