He was an important military and political leader who overthrew the Fatimid dynasty in Egypt, becoming sultan in 1174 and founding his own Ayyubite dynasty. He then extended his reign over Syria, recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders, and was successful in repelling the invading forces of the Third Crusade |
