One of the most popular names in the Arab world, 'A'isha is derived from 'a'isha (alive and well), which is from 'asha (to live). The name was borne by 'A'isha bint-Abi-Bakr (c. 613-78), daughter of the first guided caliph, Abu-Bakr al-SiddTq, and Muhammad's third and favorite wife. According to tradition, 'A'isha was only nine years old when Muhammad married her. After Muhammad's death, she strongly opposed 'Ali ibn-Abil Talib, the fourth rightly guided caliph, and called on the Muslim community to depose him. In the Battle of the Camel in 656, 'A'isha led the rebel forces herself, but was defeated and sent back to Medina, where she devoted the rest of her life to religious studies |
